Atlanta – Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Gregory Jones, FBI Atlanta, in conjunction with Chief Richard J. Pennington, Atlanta Police Department, announces the arrest today of Donnie Atkins, age 57, of Atlanta, Georgia, for his role in this morning’s armed robbery of the Capitol City Bank, located at 2358 Cascade Road, Atlanta, Georgia.

On Thursday, December 13, 2007, at approximately 9:15 a.m., two black males wearing masks and brandishing weapons entered the Capitol City Bank, 2358 Cascade Road, Atlanta, Georgia, and were immediately confronted by an armed, uniformed bank security guard at the entrance. During this confrontation, the security guard was disarmed. One of the robbers then engaged the bank employees and obtained an undisclosed amount of money.

As the robbers departed, they split up but one of them, Donnie Atkins, was confronted by uniformed Atlanta Police officer(s).  It is alleged that Atkins leveled his weapon, a .40 caliber semiautomatic, and began firing at the officer(s).  The officer(s) returned fire and struck Atkins in the left shoulder.  Atkins attempted to further flee but was apprehended a short distance away.

The other robber, described as being a black male, in his late 20’s or early 30’s, dark complexion, 5’10” to 6’0” in height, remains at large.

Atkins, currently in federal custody, is being treated for his wounds at a local area hospital.  He will have an initial appearance before a U.S. magistrate judge tomorrow, Friday, December 14, 2007.

Anyone with information regarding this matter should contact the Atlanta office FBI at tel. (404) 679-9000.
