Mr. Gregory Jones is a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and a Master's Degree in Public Administration. Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Jones served as a Deputy United States Marshal.
Mr. Jones received his appointment as a special agent in January 1981 and following completion of training was assigned to the Omaha, Nebraska office. He subsequently served in the Kansas City, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland offices where he primarily worked drug and violent crime and major offender cases. In November 1987, Mr. Jones was promoted to supervisor in the Office of Public Affairs at FBI Headquarters, where he managed the Bureau's national media and public affairs programs.
In November 1990, Mr. Jones was promoted and transferred to the Inspection Division as an assistant inspector. In November 1991, he was reassigned to the Washington Field Office, where he supervised public corruption and government fraud investigations in Washington, D.C. In April 1996, Mr. Jones was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Miami, Florida office, where he assumed investigative program management responsibility for terrorism, counterintelligence, and violent crime investigations.
In January 1999, Mr. Jones was promoted into the FBI's Senior Executive Service as section chief and was later named as acting deputy assistant director of the Operations Branch at the Bureau's Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Clarksburg, West Virginia. His responsibilities included managing several national law enforcement computer systems, including the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, and the National Crime Information Center.
In June 2001, Mr. Jones was promoted to special agent in charge of the Special Operations Division, New York office and in September 2002, he was appointed special agent in charge of the Administrative Division. In this capacity, Mr. Jones had executive management responsibility for investigative support services, financial management, personnel, training, hiring, and recruitment.
On December 10, 2003, Director Robert S. Mueller, III appointed Mr. Jones as the special agent in charge of the Atlanta Division.
