United States Attorney Maxwell Wood, Middle District of Georgia, Albany Division announces the sentencing of Kelvin M. Leroy on September 28, 2007 before the Honorable W. Louis Sands, Chief United States District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia. The Court sentenced Leroy to serve 181 months in prison without parole. The sentencing comes as the result of a guilty plea entered by Leroy. The plea agreement stipulated the following facts: On December 4, 2006, the Security Bank located at 2102 E. Oglethorpe Boulevard in Albany, Georgia was robbed at gunpoint by a masked individual. Approximately $47,206.00 was taken and the individual was seen leaving the bank in a particular Dodge Neon. Moments before the bank robbery, the Albany Police Department had received a call regarding a car-jacking having taken place at a nearby apartment complex. The vehicle taken at gunpoint was described by the victim as the same Dodge Neon which was seen leaving the bank parking lot. Based on this information along with the fact that approximately two weeks before this incident another bank on the same street had been robbed at gunpoint shortly after taking a car from this apartment complex, patrol units decided to heavily patrol the area of several banks located on East Oglethorpe Boulevard in hopes of catching sight of the car and the would-be robber. Within moments of receiving the call reporting the bank robbery, patrol units spotted the Dodge Neon and gave chase. Leroy was the driver of the vehicle. At the time he was captured, he was still wearing the mask partially covering his face and was in possession of the money and the gun used in the robbery. Leroy was interviewed, waived his Miranda rights and stated that he had robbed the bank at gun-point. This case was investigated by the Albany Police Department and Special Agent Mark Imes of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney, Leah E. McEwen.
