COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM

Beginning in 1988 with a drug awareness program, the FBI has expanded its outreach efforts to include crime, drugs, gangs, and violence, along with the federally-mandated Victim/Witness Assistance Program.  Linking community service, drug abuse prevention, and law enforcement is a national trend as grass roots efforts have brought about federal government support for public safety initiatives.  FBI employees have joined in this national movement, volunteering in a wide variety of FBI community-related efforts.

The Atlanta Division has a full-time Community Outreach Victim/Witness Coordinator who manages the various community programs sponsored and assisted by the Atlanta Division.  These programs include:

:

Bullet Adopt-A-School Program
The Atlanta Division declared its official partnership with the John Wesley Dobbs Elementary School on November 11, 1997.  This partnership involves mentoring, tutoring, and the Junior Special Agent Program, which assist socio-economically disadvantaged students to improve academically and develop into good citizens.
Bullet Speaker’s Bureau
The Atlanta Division sponsors a Speaker’s Bureau, whereby FBI employees appear as speakers at school and/or community functions.  If available, speakers can be arranged for topics covering the FBI’s investigative programs.  All such requests should be submitted in writing, well in advance of the desired date, and addressed to the attention of the Community Outreach Victim/Witness Coordinator.
Bullet FBI Citizens’ Academy Alumni Association
The Atlanta Division is planning a FBI Citizens’ Academy for the fall of 2000.  This program is designed to strengthen the ties between the law enforcement community and local civic, religious, and business leaders.  Participants, selected through a nomination process, gain a better understanding of the mission and programs of the FBI to foster open lines of communication between the FBI and the community.
Bullet Victim/Witness Crisis Response
When a criminal or community crisis arises, the Atlanta Division of the FBI provides a coordinated response along with other federal, state, and local groups to include:  the United States Attorney’s Office, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, the Georgia Crime Compensation Board, the Georgia Prosecuting Attorney’s Council, the Atlanta Metro Crime Commission, and numerous victim-advocate groups.

Victim/Witness Assistance Program

The mission of the FBI’s Victim/Witness Assistance Program is to assist victims and witnesses in FBI cases who have suffered direct or threatened physical, emotional, or pecuniary harm as a result of the commission of a crime.  The FBI’s responsibility for assisting victims and witnesses is continuous as long as a case is pending final disposition or until it is turned over to the United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Since assistance is provided on a case-by-case basis, contact the Atlanta Division Community Outreach Victim/Witness Coordinator for further details:
